Country Concert, Mall of America, Ice Fishing.. more importantly Good Friends!

A lot has happened over the last couple of weeks, but I need to keep a promise I made to my readers about our trip to Minnesota.

Three weeks ago, Michael and I made the trip to Minnesota to see our dear friends Kari and Mike.  Ever since we planned the trip, everyone we have told about it has told us we were CRAZY for travelling to Minnesota in winter.  Somehow we managed to pick the mildest winter in years... as we prepared to leave we packed for COLD but I could tell Michael was worried about being able to use all of our cold gear.  I secretly said a prayer in hopes of a cold trip and a day of ice fishing.

Luckily, our flight was out of Louisville so we were able to stay with Elisabeth the night before the flight (saving us an extremely early wake up).  We loaded up to go to the airport (much later than planned) because we received a phone call that our flight had been delayed.  On our way to the airport, we received some information that our flight had possibly been cancelled and immediately started to panic.  After tears at the airport, frustrated conversations about getting to Minneapolis at a decent hour, we are thankful we had friends in Minnesota with flight experience and managed to find a flight that would work.  An hour ride in a cab back to Lexington and a 20 minute run in the Detroit airport (all with a bum thumb), we made it at a decent hour!  Needless to say, travelling with Michael in the airport always tests our relationship, and I swear he has some bad omen following him around when he even talks about flying, but as always we pulled through stronger than ever.  It was great to be with our friends!

Friday evening we went to the Luke Bryan/ Jason Aldean concert, and had an absolutely amazing time!  We had a blast laughing, singing, drinking, and dancing the night away.

Thumbs Up for the Concert!

Awesome seats!
Here's a liitle tidbit of one of my favorite songs:

We were reminded that our minds although young, our bodies take some time to recover from that much fun.  After reminiscing and being lazy the first half of the days (reminding me again of the college days) we set out to tour the Twin cities.  We managed to get some good food that came with a nice little warning, see a lobster claw game, tour the city, try to see a Gopher Hockey game and be tourists in the Mall of America.  We chose to take it easy on our bodies (after all we have grown up... sometimes), because we had an exciting day of ice fishing ahead of us.

Michael said it's one of the best burgers he's had!

 Interesting Concept!

Mall of America!

Rollercoaster

The boys on the rollercoaster:

We decided to head out to Wisconsin to find some good ice fishing (remember it's been a mild winter, and I saw the mail man in shorts the day before).  A little car ride and a speeding ticket later (sorry Mike.. again I think this is a bad omen that comes with Michael), we made it to the lake.  We were skeptical about being able to drive out on the ice, but managed to pull up to see lots of trucks on the ice.  We slowly eased out onto the ice, making sure to roll down the windows for safety precautions.  It was definitely a weird feeling as we drove out on the ice hearing it crack beneath us.  We managed to set up camp, and had a blast.  Fortunately it was cold enough for ice fishing, but not too cold to be miserable (and of course I got to wear my Valentine's Day present!) Michael and I can now cross something off the bucket list!

Drillin' Holes!

Ready to Fish!

My first catch of the day, had to take a pic in case I didn't catch anything else!

After a long day on the ice, we headed back to the house to fry up some fish from Mike and Kari's previous fishing trips.  It was nice cooking up dinner and relaxing.  I tried hard to soak up the last hours with our friends.  I am so happy that Kari is "home" but it breaks my heart that we are now so far away.  I feel like sometimes we take for granted our friends when they are close, so it was very important that we treasured that time together.

Fortunately, Michael and I made it home safely without any more flying drama, smiling from a fabulous weekend, but sad to leave good friends, and even more for me dreading what was to come with the thumb saga.  That most likely will be the next blog...

Happy Valentine's Day

E very year on Valentine’s Day, I turn the volume all the way up and blare OutKast singing Happy Valentine’s Day. There’s a line I’ve always loved: “Every day is the 14th.” It’s bold. A little gritty. Not soft and pink and Hallmark.  And maybe that’s why it resonates with me. Because love — real love — isn’t just one day. It isn’t just flowers and dinner reservations and polished smiles for pictures. If it’s real, it’s daily. It’s ordinary. It’s choosing each other when no one is clapping. Yesterday morning I put on a shirt that simply said, “You matter.”  On the back it read, “Dear person behind me, the world is a better place with you in it.” I wore it to CJ’s basketball game, not thinking much of it. But somewhere between the squeak of sneakers and the echo of whistles, a woman I had never met tapped me on the shoulder and asked if she could hug me. A complete stranger, that the message resonated with. And it hit me — we are all walking around needing that message. We need ...

Returning After 14 Years-- 2025: A Year That Asked a Lot

It’s been 14 years since I last wrote here.  In that time, I stepped away from blogging, but I hadn't stopped writing.  I've captured life's moments on Facebook, in social media posts, and in the pages of my journal. Truth of the matter is, I function best when words are written.  A lot has happened in the time since I've written here — we’ve added two busy, fun kids to our family, lost our sweet Bo, welcomed a new dog, Bruno, navigated COVID, experienced family loss, and lived through all the messy, beautiful moments in between. Blogging may not be what it once was, but some things are still worth putting into words. This post is my reflection on 2025 — a year that stretched me, stripped things down to what was real, and reminded me of what truly matters. ⸻ 2025: A Year That Asked a Lot 2025 asked a lot of me. It stretched me in ways I didn’t see coming and stripped things down to what was real. This year wasn’t loud about its lessons—but it was relentless. Family ...

Moving On Up with the Help of a Fortune Cookie and Stanley Steamer

Wow, I need to blog more.  I need to take more time out to reflect on what's going on in my life, but Michael and I have had recent adventures that demand a little blog time.... We've been talking about getting the house on the market for awhile now, and we've finally had some things happen that have really helped us make a positive turn and get 'our butts in gear' (as my mom would say).  My fortune cookie from Chinese take-out has proven to bring us some good luck, and I hope it continues! Big Dreams!!!!  In the last week, we've met with a realtor and despite Michael's 'jump in' attitude, I had to 'put my foot down' and say, "Things have got to be done around this house before I let anyone take pictures!"  We've been working on small projects here and there, but last Wednesday we finally decided to take on some bigger projects.  Why we waited until the start of the school year? I'm not sure... nor do I ask questions a...
