In the Summer, the Song Sings Itself!

Wow, I can't believe how long it has been since I last sat down and blogged... I started the summer thinking, I'd make more time to sit down and share my thoughts with my millions of readers (remember, I always dream big).... but now I'm sitting here asking "Where did summer go?" and "Do I really need to start thinking about work?!"

This summer surely has been a whirlwind, and I can proudly say that I have worked only ONE day this summer so far... now the next couple of weeks that will change... but I definitely believe I have set a personal record for myself.  So let me just take a break from writing, and give myself a HUGE pat on the back! :)

So if I haven't been in school mode, so what have I been doing?!  LOTS that is for sure.... I'll just have to share a few of my highlights of summer thus far, in attempt not to bore you to death.

The first month of summer, I spent living at Jazzercise.  Most of you know my competitive nature, and we always have a summer contest to win a fun prize and to encourage attendance.  Well for whatever reason, I took this as a personal challenge, being that the contest was in June and July, and I saw myself travelling and struggling to make it to class in July, I was determined to have my partner and I get 60 classes before I left for the beach.  Yes you did the math correct, two people, sixty classes between June 1 and June 23rd, impossible?!  Absolutely NOT!  Now I'm pretty sure that my partner thought I was insane, but then again Jenny has known me for a very long time, and these psycho tendencies should not be anything new to her by now!  Not only did we get the bags before June 23rd, but we got in great beach/lake shape doing it :)  That's what I keep telling myself anyways!

Jenny and I and our bags... we rocked it :)
In between Jazzy classes, I found myself reading, running, preparing for the wedding, making doctors appointments, and being crafty.  I'm continuing to work on a belt for Michael, and he insists I get it done by the wedding... talk about a slave driver... my life is about to get even more crazy, and he wants me to needlepoint too?!?  I can't complain, it is something that often allows me to clear my head, and be calm for a little bit... I'm making progress, but I'm still not convinced it will be done before the wedding.... only time will tell.

Michael's Belt I am working on:

Our annual beach trip was another wonderful, peaceful vacation.  We spent two weeks in Duck, NC... and it still continues to be the most amazing place ever.  I have so many childhood memories growing up there, but it is absolutely the best place to vacation.  We were very lucky and only had two yucky days there for the entire two weeks.  The first week, my Aunt Margaret, Uncle Lou, and cousin Marissa were stayed with us.  The second week Michael and his parents joined us.  I could go on and on about the fun that we had, but I'll just tell you about a typical day in the life of a Kate on vacation.

A typical day on vacation for me:
7 am: Wake Up- run/ walk through the Town of Duck
8 am: Return, eat breakfast
9 am: I'm already at the beach
1 pm: return back to the house--- eat lunch
2 pm: head to the pool
6 pm: return home, make plan for dinner
Relax the rest of the evening, wake up, do it all again..... I'm a creature of habit!

Last Day at the Beach!

My major feat of this vacation was the amount of running and reading I did.  I'm working on a couch to 10K program (I do better when someone tells me how far to run, and how long to run), and the miles just came naturally to me at the beach (and I'm happy to say with the exception of the last two days, I've been able to carry the running over to home)... I also finished tons of books... all very different but all books that I recommend for some reason or another... Sing You Home by Jodi Picoult, Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin, Wedding Girl by Madeline Wickham, One Day by David Nicholls, and Something Blue by Emily Giffin.

Upon returning from the beach, Michael and I were lucky enough to make a trip to Jenny's parent's houseboat.  It was a quick trip, but very relaxing.  Michael and I realized we are getting old, and tubing can be tough on the body... but it was nice to get away for the weekend.

Tubing!

Gone Swimming....
More recently, I have got lots of wedding stuff checked off the "to do" list... I can't believe we are less than 3 months out!  Michael and I were talking about it the other day, and it seems like just yesterday was New Year's Eve and we were surrounded by friends as he popped the question... now I'm just sitting here wondering "Where did the time go?"  Next big feat, get invitations in the mail.... WOW.. that just makes it SO real!  I'm thankful for my wonderful mother that continually asks me "did you do this?" "did you do that?" or just says "I'll take care of it"  What a wonderful mom I have!
The Card Cake Jenny and I made for the wedding!

So as I wrap up the 'fun' part of summer, I can look back with no regrets.  It's been so nice to do the things I love, and have time to actually enjoy them.... now starts a very crazy three months with the start of school and finalizing wedding plans... I think I can, I think I can, I think I can!

Happy Valentine's Day

E very year on Valentine’s Day, I turn the volume all the way up and blare OutKast singing Happy Valentine’s Day. There’s a line I’ve always loved: “Every day is the 14th.” It’s bold. A little gritty. Not soft and pink and Hallmark.  And maybe that’s why it resonates with me. Because love — real love — isn’t just one day. It isn’t just flowers and dinner reservations and polished smiles for pictures. If it’s real, it’s daily. It’s ordinary. It’s choosing each other when no one is clapping. Yesterday morning I put on a shirt that simply said, “You matter.”  On the back it read, “Dear person behind me, the world is a better place with you in it.” I wore it to CJ’s basketball game, not thinking much of it. But somewhere between the squeak of sneakers and the echo of whistles, a woman I had never met tapped me on the shoulder and asked if she could hug me. A complete stranger, that the message resonated with. And it hit me — we are all walking around needing that message. We need ...

Returning After 14 Years-- 2025: A Year That Asked a Lot

It’s been 14 years since I last wrote here.  In that time, I stepped away from blogging, but I hadn't stopped writing.  I've captured life's moments on Facebook, in social media posts, and in the pages of my journal. Truth of the matter is, I function best when words are written.  A lot has happened in the time since I've written here — we’ve added two busy, fun kids to our family, lost our sweet Bo, welcomed a new dog, Bruno, navigated COVID, experienced family loss, and lived through all the messy, beautiful moments in between. Blogging may not be what it once was, but some things are still worth putting into words. This post is my reflection on 2025 — a year that stretched me, stripped things down to what was real, and reminded me of what truly matters. ⸻ 2025: A Year That Asked a Lot 2025 asked a lot of me. It stretched me in ways I didn’t see coming and stripped things down to what was real. This year wasn’t loud about its lessons—but it was relentless. Family ...

Moving On Up with the Help of a Fortune Cookie and Stanley Steamer

Wow, I need to blog more.  I need to take more time out to reflect on what's going on in my life, but Michael and I have had recent adventures that demand a little blog time.... We've been talking about getting the house on the market for awhile now, and we've finally had some things happen that have really helped us make a positive turn and get 'our butts in gear' (as my mom would say).  My fortune cookie from Chinese take-out has proven to bring us some good luck, and I hope it continues! Big Dreams!!!!  In the last week, we've met with a realtor and despite Michael's 'jump in' attitude, I had to 'put my foot down' and say, "Things have got to be done around this house before I let anyone take pictures!"  We've been working on small projects here and there, but last Wednesday we finally decided to take on some bigger projects.  Why we waited until the start of the school year? I'm not sure... nor do I ask questions a...
